My mom is a motor cause factor for my mental health, trusts issues and just being avoidant. Sometimes I wish she wasn’t my mom. I feel like her becoming a mom and a wife made her bitter and angry and just turning into this person with an evil angry look in their eyes every time someone does a minor mistake.

A part of me wishes she chose herself instead. Chased whatever goals and dreams she had before becoming a mom. Yes I know she sacrifices a lot for me but I wish she didn’t have to. Why can’t it be easier for her?

I hate having to carry her problems as my own and even having to hear about them. I get so tired.

I get this agitated, irritated feel whenever I have to talk to my mom. I love her to bits but I hate her as a person. I hope she heals but for now, I’m still angry.

Much of mainstream music talks about abusing women, using them and mistreating them. Most lyrics are dismissed as ‘just music’ yet repetition normalises disrespect. This repeated exposure makes certain language feel normal rather than extreme.

As a woman, it’s so alienating because you’re expected to tolerate constant degradation if you’re gonna enjoy the music. Honestly, when a rap song starts sounding too violent and misogynistic i just end up turning it off.

Many mainstream songs avoid referring to women as human beings instead replacing the word ‘women’ with hostile labels and slurs. Kinda sucks that you can only ever enjoy it if you’re okay with being called a ‘bitch’, ‘whore’ or ‘slut’ unprovoked, for no actual reason. Why does no one ever talk about this?

Not only that, it also glamorises sexual violence towards women. Lyrics such as “put molly in her champagne, she ain’t even know it” or “took her home and enjoyed that, she ain’t even know”frame sexual coercion or violence as casual or consequence-free. Some lyrics go beyond objectification and begin to normalise coercion, manipulation, and even sexual violence. Why is such culture being encouraged?

At the same time women get criticised for listening to feminine music with artists such as Taylor Swift yet there’s no hate for misogynistic music. In fact they call us crazy and “too woke” for even bringing it up.

If such music is normalised, what does it mean for how young boys view girls in general? Music contributes to cultural attitudes even if it doesn’t directly cause behaviour and for listeners who are being described in these lyrics, it doesn’t feel abstract rather normal.

In conclusion, this is not about censoring music, but about recognising patterns in what is being normalised .Mainstream music deserves more critical attention when it comes to how women are represented, and what that representation reinforces over time.

But if we’re being so real, I think the reason most people act like they don’t care is because they are so afraid of being hurt or are we just socially anxious? Please allow yourself to just be out there. Tell that person you like them because if you keep pretending nothing matters, nothing actually will. One day you’re gonna wake up and ask yourself ‘why don’t I feel alive’ and why your days feel so repetitive and the answer is because you’ve been rehearsing this ‘nonchalantness’ for years. This serious rise of nonchalantness is killing passion. There’s so many lost hobbies.

Passion requires you to be vulnerable, be passionate about what you do. Stop playing it safe. Life is like a basketball(I believe) so shoot your shot. Do whatever you like.

Beauty isn’t fixed, it shifts depending on who’s looking. Someone can look at you and see absolute beauty while someone else might not and to be fair both reactions can exist at the same time, and so don’t be disheartened.

This whole idea is linked back to beauty standards which in the other hand are a social construct.These therefore force people to internalise external opinions.The whole idea that you’re ‘ugly’ isn’t usually discovered, it’s absorbed. It’s a result of repeated signals, comparisons and most subtle ways you are responded to by society.

We are all born beautiful, the biggest tragedy is convinced we are not. You are very much who you think you are.

Ok but on a real note, I do believe everyone issue is that they base their attractiveness on validation from others. Cause oh wait they don’t find me pretty so now im ugly. Like oh no. If you cannot look at yourself in the mirror and say ‘I’m beautiful’ because others don’t say it there’s a real problem. You are beautiful.

We need to stop waiting to be validated by others. Instead validate yourself. Be there for yourself. The most important person in our lives is us. It never made sense to me when a woman wearing revealing clothing was ‘dirty’ because it’s just a normal human body. Modesty teaches women they are sinful and sexual objects but to believe a woman is ‘sexualising herself’ for wearing revealing clothing is implying that a woman’s body is inherently sexual. And yes some girls might start saying ‘oh but only my future husband can see my body’ but why are girls taught their bodies belong to future husbands? Hello why are we even thinking of an imaginary man?? A woman’s value is not tied to modesty nor any male entitlement.

The idea often promoted is covering protects you and prevents sexual violence but in reality sexual violence exists regardless of clothing, covering does not stop harassment and it does not control other people’s actions. Therefore if modesty truly prevented sexualisation or violence then covering women completely would’ve eliminated these problems but it doesn’t. Showing your body doesn’t sexualise you and hiding it doesn’t desexualise you. Let’s take Islamic women in Afghanistan for example. They are covered from head to toe but there are far more rape cases.

In many African households girls are often told to cover up for male relatives but not for women. Having to be taught that men will look and your body is dangerous but why are girls taught to change their behaviour instead of boys being taught to control theirs?

Men don’t cover up, men’s bodies are not sexualised the same way. A man shirtless is normal but a woman’s shoulder is so very inappropriate, the double standard is real. If modesty were truly about respect the rules would apply equally but they don’t. Therefore if anyone and anything can be sexualised then covering everything won’t stop sexualisation, the problem isn’t the body but perception. Modesty teaches your body is dangerous, distracting and causes problems implying women are responsible for male thoughts and must manage male behaviour. There’s a strong sense of a patriarchy, sexism and misogyny.

A woman dressing modestly for male validation is no different to a woman dressing half naked for male validation. The other will weaponise being modest so they get picked and believe they are more deserving than those who don’t. Both are centred around male approval. Also if men prefer modest women then how can revealing clothing be for male attention?

On the other hand, sexualisation is often racialised. Different groups of woman are sexualised differently. Black women are often hypersexualised, some cultures are labelled as ‘modest’ and others as ‘promiscuous’, this all connects to history and power.

“Desiring a woman to be fully covered is the same as desiring her to be naked. In both instances you see her body solely as a sex object. We just tend to see modesty as more virtuous because it’s encouraged with the intention of getting men to turn away from their sexual desire. But it’s still demeaning because women are still being asked to tailor themselves to what’s best for men.”- 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐰𝐚.

This systematic deprecation shaped how shona speakers perceived its value and this plays out in our everyday reality.

“Shona was part of the ghetto daemon I was trying to escape.Shona had been placed within the context of a degraded, mind wrenching experience from which apparently the only escape was into the English language and education. I took the English language as a duck takes to water.” -𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐳𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚

When Zimbabwean writer, 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐳𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚 was asked why he never wrote in Shona he describes it as part of a ‘ghetto daemon’ reflecting how the language had been confined to spaces of punishment, trapped conditions of poverty and limitation under colonial rule, mission schools, segregated education and racial hierarchies where English was the only route to safety, mobility and intellectual recognition. Therefore English wasn’t chosen because it was better, it was chosen because it was positioned as the only escape.

Moreover we can see how colonial education was conducted primarily in English, indigenous languages were excluded from higher education, governance and publishing, literacy recognition, exams and social mobility required English. Altogether 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚’𝐬 words illustrate how colonialism did not merely suppress indigenous languages but reshaped how their speakers experienced or valued them.

In addition we can see this systematic reprioritisation play out in English only schools where the use of Shona is punishable and Shona being associated with inferiority limiting its use in formal knowledge therefore having students internalise this hierarchy , and having language as a gate keeper to power. Access to jobs, government positions or higher education require English. Speaking Shona won’t open the same doors so using English is pragmatic, not betrayal but a better way to survive and succeed in the system.

In conclusion the persistence of English dominance in education and professional life allows colonial era stigma to survive, influencing how Shona is used,code switched or avoided today.

Dear Lord

Thank you so much for how far you’ve taken me really.You are litch the best dad ever and I genuinely cannot suppress for how much you’ve showed up for me.Like on and actual genuine Lord.

My heart has this big hole that is filled with burst for how much I litch am so like,I cannot believe you keep showing up for me Lord.I cannot litch explain in words if I did my heart would litch burst with love and so many upside down smiles coz I’m like what.No like actually what.

But Lord if I claim I love you so much ,why do i never make time for you.Like why don’t I make that much time for you as I am supposed to.You know every-time I think about it I’m so much taken aback coz what.It feels like so much betrayal but at the same time my heart yearns to know so much about you but I just can never make it.

Like woah why don’t I ever?.My heart yearns so much for you Lord and I try and maybe I genuinely don’t at the same time.Like it feels like so much betrayal.If I start and keep thinking about it my head will burst but see how it’s my head bursting and not my heart?.Lord I’m actually now on the verge of tears.Because of you I am who I am today.

I’m so full and of love and so much emotion be You Lord taught me how to be this way.So much full of empathy and I feel so so much Lord.I always used to question why I love so much but it’s coz of you Lord,Lord it’s coz of you.I thank you so so much words cannot suppress.

I thank you so much ,you took me out of that hole you are so so wonderful.You saved me Lord you gave me life in my actual death like on an actual actual you gave me so much purpose Lord.Worthy is your name Lord.My heart beats yearning for you

And that’s where I finished because after that I had to write another letter about J I will probs publish that idk but yeah that was how I was feeling at that moment and wish I had written more
